I think that is how the internet started, daddyo, as links between various institutions and universities. I read a book a while back about 2 teen boys who hacked into the system right back in the early days. Into American govt closed systems, defence I think. I'm sure things changed rapidly after that.
What has changed most on the internet from my point of view is that there is a lot more you can look up now. As I said, I was online from the mid 1990s but a lot of the ancestry websites only developed enough to be useful from 2000 and it has exploded in the last 5 years. Shops usually had no online presence in the late 1990s or even early 2000s. Ebay is now struggling a bit, changing direction, & I think some of it comes down to people having more choices, more buying sites. Same with property & cars. I don't think those sorts of sites took off till the 2000s.
MrP, I don't mind facebook (if that is what you were referring to). But it isn't a site for sharing opinions or discussion. Useful to keep up with news, see photos. Yesterday I found out a niece is expecting their 3rd child. I don't see them often so I feel as if the site keeps me up to speed on family events.

Truly I can't stand both. Vile companies, vile products. Enabling state, busybody, creep, troublemaker snooping.
FACEBOOK LISTENS TO YOUR REAL LIFE, VERBAL COMMUNICATION [TALKING].

I don't talk on facebook. There's a messenger thing for sending messages. I don't know what they could gain from my messages, they're pretty mundane I am afraid.
