Maybe it's an age thing.
I advertised a wedding wishing well @ $35 & a clear plastic umbrella(unopened) @ $4 on gumtree. Thought they would probably go together. Sold the wishing well, forgot the umbrella ad. Today I get a text, someone is after the umbrella. I had actually been about to take it to the op shop, it was only about $7.95 new.
Then I get a second text, can he pay for it into a bank account or must it be cash? (for $4, I ask you!!. I just sent a message back he could have it for free.
Then I get another message. He said he has arrived, is outside the house. So out I go, he is standing there in the driveway with his phone!!
For goodness sakes, why didn't he hit the doorbell? I may not have heard my mobile.
This is getting to be a trend. People drive to your place then sit outside and phone?

Sherri, people can't live without their mobile phones these days. I have one but don't really need it. I look at people walking around the supermarket and almost everyone has a mobile in their hand. I get most annoyed when they stand at the checkout talking on their phone. Even my own family cart their mobiles with them and spend half the time talking on the phone.

Daybreak I am like you. I have a mobile (of sorts) but I don't use it that often, only when I need to. But people, especially young ones, are addicted to them. They sit in their lounge chairs and just scroll. There may be 3 or 4 of them in the room, all with mobiles out. I do get bemused by a friend of mine. She used to be what I would call very strict in her ideas. She would say things such as.. people don't need a colour television, they are just after more & more. Or (about a corner near here where there were petrol stations on 3 of the corners) that it was unnecessary & just making people lazy. Myself, I don't think preferring to drive into a service station from the direction you are driving is lazy but my concern was there might not be enough customers for all 3.
But anyhow, she has an up to the minute mobile and when we are in the car, she will check it. She always does apologise but she always says-'It is very important I take this call at the moment etc etc'
What worries me much more than mobiles is the fact public phones are dying out so if you have a flat mobile, you are on your own, no way to get in emergency contact.

You still got the umbrella? I'll give you 4 dollars, promise not to show up on your doorstep, and you pay the shipping?
Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Sorry, couldn't help myself. Haha that is so much like some ebay customers.
The man got his umbrella, it is for a photo session with his girlfriend, but after he left I found another message on my phone (in reply to where I said he could have it for free) saying he was after two if I had them. Really, if I had two, didn't he think I would have advertised it as such?
Anyway, he got his free one but drove 20 minutes to get it. Then home I presume. A 40 minute drive for something you can pick up in shops for under $10.

Gee, Joe, you're pretty good if you agree to meet someone at a train station, but I suppose she had paid for it so the odds were good she would turn up.
As you know, on gumtree you usually don't get any money till they arrive or agree to buy.
I had a bedroom suite for sale on gumtree & a man contacted me, offered a lot less, then asked if I would deliver it-to a western suburb location. By the time I paid tolls and petrol I wouldn't have had much left! Plus I bet when I arrived, he would have changed his mind unless I came down in price again!
With the new trends to phone from outside, I understand people are wary of strangers but surely knocking at a front door should be safe. It is the householder who is more at risk.
The person who bid in your driveway-was it a repeat customer? He just assumed you were home? Haha would have been funny if you had said you would be home for pick up in 2 hours.
We (my sister & I) 'sold' a big bundle of CDs on ebay to a dealer, pick up only. My sister messaged a range of times he could pick up & asked if any suited or to let her know when he would like to pick up & they could arrange a mutually agreeable time. He wanted us to post but we said no (he wasn't going to pay extra) then one day he said he was in the area and would pick up right then, but my sister wasn't home and didn't see his message for 30 minutes in any case. He eventually paid via paypal & told us that meant we had to post but we said no it didn't. So he rang paypal & got his money refunded. I think he told them he 'tried' to pick up but my sister didn't co-operate! The interesting thing is a person can buy that way & then never get a strike for non payment.

SHERRI in fact the person from south yarra paid on pick up mind you she texed me while on the train with a time and noble park station only up the road from keysborough. but yes i trust people , maybe too much but in the first couple of years while working from home and going to another depot in brunswick i would of had 300 odd people pick up from my front door and leave the money under my matt or in the elec box when theres more than 1 pick , and got paid for everyone , and no complaints, so i said if the system is not broken why change it. these days as you here on the ebay board everyone is scared what if and what about. sure someone could of picked up and not paid , but my record was intact.

Yes, there has to be some trust. I have picked up in the past where the item was left on the porch & they said leave money in letter box. They were home but hosting a kids party so didn't want to be disturbed I guess. I just left the money where they said and went on my way, no problem. but apparently there are the occasional weirdos out there I guess.
