It looks as if the Beaumont children are on the verge of being found. Or at least I hope so.
If you are not from Australia then you might not have heard of them but it is probably one of the most famous cases in Australia.
Back on a hot day in Jan 1966, 3 siblings got on a bus to go to the beach near their home.
They disappeared. The eldest one was a girl of 9 & there was also another girl of 7 & a boy of 4.
At first it was thought they may have drowned or a sand dune may have collapsed but some people who had sighted them on the beach also saw a man near them.
But what exactly happened to them was always a mystery.
Police are today going to start digging up ground in a factory. Turns out the owner, a millionaire & recipient of community awards etc was likely the killer. His son came forward a few years back but police dug up the wrong section, as it turns out (layouts & gate locations change in 50 years).
I was fairly young myself back in the days when they went missing but I still remember it very well & one thing that has always struck me is that a parent would let her children go off to the beach on their own for the morning when the youngest one was only 4.
Documentaries about it always comment that no one was ever critical of the family as life was different then, safer. I'm not so sure. I think parents were definitely more relaxed but the media may have been more polite & didn't want to lay into parents who were already under huge stress.
I remember kids could wander around a lot more but to the beach, to go swimming? Big responsibility on a 9 year old.
Still, the parents lost their entire family & have never had any closure.
I think the parents may still be alive.
So I hope the police find the bodies.
