So, daddyo, how are things going with that hurricane over your way? is there any chance it could reach you, are you in a hurricane area?
I've never really been in a hurricane, it isn't something we get down here in Victoria. Was once up on the Gold coast (Queensland), when one went through a bit further up north. We didn't get it but I have never seen such torrential rain in my entire life.

Harvey turned out to be tougher than I thought he would be.......even with his wimpy name. He initially scooted south of Cuba into the gulf as a wimpy Tropical Storm, but as soon as he hit the warm waters of the Gulf, he grew and grew and grew into a catagorie 4 hurricane (5 is the largest and Katrina was a 3). There are 9 million people in Harvey's path. The 130 mph wind storm has subsided and now the flooding will be the worst tragedy in Texas since Hurricane Carla in 1961. The storm surge may reach 12 feet (4 meters) in height. Storm surge is the level the ocean will rise to due to the wind and rain. Twelve feet willl bring deep flooding some 50 to 75 miles inland (coastal area is rather flat in Texas). There are now 1/2 a million people without electricity and will be for 3-6 weeks. Houston is a ghost town with most people flooding (no pun intended) into San Antonio, Austin and any place else they can find refuge. One of the bigger problems is that 40% (9 refineries) of the oil refineries in the USA are in the path of Harvey and have been shut down. This means higher gasoline prices not only in the USA, but Canada and Mexico as well. My granddaughters are in Austin, and they tell me there is severe flooding throughout the City on major highways and streets. But, they are happy as they mesmerize there will be no school for a week or ten days. I told them they would have to make it up in the summer and they poo-pood me off of the phone to talk to a more sympathectic voice - Grandma. The little shits. No hurricane activity in Florida, but we are getting some very heavy rains. When a hurricane is in the gulf it creates a low pressure system and the east coast of Florida (high pressure) in the cold waters of the Atlantic blow across Florida and take a lot of water with it........hence, torrential rain at times. I have had to drain about 6 inches of water out of my pool each day to prevent it from overtopping and flooding my neighbor. I have drained about 1.5 feet in the last three days, which is a lot of water..........at least to a boy that grew up in the west Texas desert of El Paso where we were lucky to get 3 inches of rain per year.. But it could be worse. Rockport (close-by girlhood home of Janis Joplin) has been leveled. I always liked her song "Me and Bobby McGee". Anyhow, and to make a long story more boring ........here is what's happening in Texas: www.nbcnews.com/storyline/hurricane-harvey

I don't know exactly what will happen with the schools. Over here, there are no summer schools & the term dates are set in concrete years in advance so they would have trouble messing with them. Mainly because teachers in droves make holiday plans & book well in advance-they have to as school holiday times book out fast.
I think what would probably happen here is they would just open the schools asap & maybe offer some extra online work.
I was going to say before & after school sessions but even that is fraught as most secondary school age kids have buses to catch etc
But over your way, I know they often do have summer schools so that would be a good idea, to offer it if children wished to attend. In a way I wish they offered limited summer school sessions over here. (By that I mean maybe not at every school but a few per region, to revise basic parts of the curric, advertised in advance). We have a huge problem here with parents who pull their kids out of school for up to 3-4 months to go overseas to visit the rellies, but then absolutely refuse to let the child repeat a grade or whatever. More common in primary than secondary though, I have to admit.
I'm glad to hear you haven't had to contend with a hurricane, just the rain.
3-6 weeks without electricity seems excessive. There's no way people could live that long without it there, they would have to, as you say, move out. Not so much for the lighting, but for food as we rely on our fridges these days. And who would have enough candles to last that long either. We're not set up these days.

Houston, we have a problem. It's all or nothing over there, scorching hot sunshine for most of the year. Then torrential rainfall with mass flooding. We just get a steady flow of wind, rain, and cloud.

Over here, we can get the 4 seasons in one day. It was nice & sunny this morning, a bit of white/overcast about at the moment. Temps are supposed to be between 12-18c this week so a bit chilly but at least it isn't raining or flooding & the electricity is working so I can't complain. Lots of people in the world worse off at the moment.

Goodbye Harvey........Hello Irene.
She has her sights on Miami. The pool is my least concern now. Time to batten down the hatches. If that doesn't work, sit down, put your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye.

How far are you from Miami? This one may only be a little one, not as bad as Harvey so fingers crossed.

It is predicted to be a Catagorie 4.......same as Harvey, by the time it gets here.....especially if it goes into the Gulf. I am about 200 miles from Miami, but if Irma skirts the east coast it will be about 70 miles from me. If she hits Gulf, she's either right on top of me, or she will hit New Orleans or Texas again.
I bought a new 4500 Watt Generator today, and I have added ports where I can plug it in.
I also bought about 200 bottles of water....just in case. Tomorrow I buy at least 200 gallon's of gasoline.
If she misses, I can always use the water and gas in the future. If she hits ..........get out the guns to keep the neighbors from looting you....LOL
THE SAD THING IS OUR PRESIDENT DOES NOT BELIEVE IN GLOBAL WARMING. SOMETHING IS CHURNING THESE BIG STORMS, AND THE GULF IS ABOUT 5 DEGREES WARMER THAN USUAL.
What a fool he is.

I don't think I'd fancy being right in the thick of a cyclone so let's hope this one skirts the coast and doesn't hit you too hard! Gasoline is petrol? What will you use the petrol for? Or do you ,mean bottled gas? I wasn't sure. I'm surprised essential supplies have not been rationed/limited.

Irma, the Bitch, is now at a category 5 ....the largest Hurricane there is. She has winds up to 175 miles per hour, and she will take any house she chooses to do and dump it in the Gulf of Mexico.
The last Hurricane of this size was in 1935 when 239 people lost their lives.
I can hardly wait.........photos at 5 pm. Just kidding. The Bitch won't show up here until this weekend.
