Daddyo, I noticed you were asking about architectural styles on FB. I don't usually post much in there, prefer messageboards as I can go into more detail. Architectural styles vary in Australia-basically anything goes, but some of the older suburbs have older style homes, the new suburbs have a more distinctive modern look.
If you like art deco though, you should visit Napier in NZ. One of their cities is almost all art deco. What happened was an earthquake devastated the area back on the 1930s & it was rebuilt, I think with the help of architecture students for design. Something like that.
I thought you might be interested in some of the photos we took a couple of years back. It's a beautiful town, it really is. Not all that huge.
The church is the only original pre earthquake church still standing in the city area.
Look how elaborate even the companies made their buildings. You wouldn't see this attention to detail these days!! The following photos are from inside the Tobacco company building.

The downtown area looks so much like Miami, I would swear it was.......especially around South Beach.
I think Granty was there and could attest to that......when he wasn't watching the ladies on roller skates......another great South Beach attraction.

Nice pics Sherri. I haven't seen Napier in NZ as yet. New Zealand is such a beautiful country to visit. So many different landscapes and towns as you drive along. Wouldn't mind going back to discover more of the North Island, up to Bay of Islands. I might have to find some photos to put up of our last visit there in 2011

Lola, I'm up for another NZ cruise one day! Want to do maybe a European trip & the Alaskan thing first, & wouldn't mind China which is super cheap at present, but for sure, give it a couple of years & we would be up for NZ again. Napier is worth seeing, daddyo. You can even get to NZ by plane if you have to!!

You would love NZ, daddyo. What struck me is how clean the whole country is. Rarely see graffiti. And it isn't overcrowded, very pretty countryside and a small country, easy to get around in. There were times I forgot I was in a foreign country, to tell the truth. And the people are so friendly.
Napier is a lovely little town, I suspect it comes to life more when a ship comes in. The locals go all out with the displays & activities.

There's the magic word for getting Lola's attention..........CRUISE. NZ sounds pretty cool (no pun intended). Let me know when. You rang? Of course, cruising to NZ is on my bucket list also. We have been twice to NZ (flew over) and loved it both times, and want to see more of NZ. When we were driving from Queenstown towards Twizel, we went past lakes and Mt. Cook, and the lakes were a fluoro green! Joe, yes, the names were always a challenge, our friend who is New Zealander, went over with us last time, and as we drive along, she says how to pronounce the names. I think my fave one I finally got really good was Mount Maunganui. Pronounced Morgan noy. And if that wasn't enough, when we went towards Lanarch Castle in Dunedin, we stopped for fuel along the way, and I asked, how far to "Dunnydin"....and the lady asked me again, and then she chuckled, because it is pronounced Dun ee din. And I was saying dunny din.

Florida has a City named Dunedin just north of here. I didn't pronounce it correctly either, but my wife did.................damn Florida girls.
I guess if you live on an island, albeit a very big one, Cruises come natural to you. I grew up in the desert of West Texas...........no water anywhere.

I don't know about come natural. There aren't many cruise choices from here. The Sth pacific & NZ or the far north coast, Queensland are the main destinations. America has the best ships, it's cruise paradise over there!!
We got started as one day my daughter wanted a holiday so I did some research & we found a cruise, but it was booked out. She & her friend put their names on a waiting list & got in about a week before it sailed, at a bargain price. We picked them up from the airport coming home & both girls raved, especially about the food. One is coeliac, the other vegetarian & they said they got superior service.
So then when I spoke to Lola she said she always dreamed of going on a cruise, why didn't we go together one day? We invited another couple and about 8 months later, off we all sailed to the Sth Pacific!!
What I find refreshing about cruises is if you go by plane, there is a big to do about passports. On ships, you have a cruise card (like a credit card on a lanyard round your neck) and just ping off and on the ship in different countries-just walk off.
