Obviously, the regime in North Korea (NK) poses extreme threats to the national security of not only the United States, but anyone else they think might be a threat to them. In my opinion, the main targets would be the United States, South Korea, Japan, Russia and even China. When you give this much power to a crazy person that minds not starving his own people in order to build more and more nukes, there’s a loose cannon that needs to be dealt with, and the sooner, the better.
So, what is the solution? Diplomacy or Brute Force?
Let’s look at Diplomacy first.
Washington and Seoul have repeatedly tried diplomatic overtures, but all were firmly rejected by Pyongyang. Kim Jong-un’s regime has vowed never to abandon its nuclear weapons or return to the Six-Party Talks, thus more negations would seem to be fruitless.
Next, we could try to have China ratchet up the pressure on NK, after all, China is the largest trading partner with NK, and imposing more sanctions against them might be enough to bring them back to the negotiating table………………………..but in reality, I don’t think it would happened unless we pressured China to make it happen. IMHO I would tell China that if they are not worried about having nukes in NK, then they most likely would not have a problem if the US moves nukes into South Korea (SK)……..or even Japan, or both. Perhaps this might get the Chinese off of their duff and working for an acceptable NK decision. It would certainly raise the ire of Russia………………no?
One other thing, most people think that NK is one of the most heavily sanctioned countries in the world, when in fact, they are not. The US could implement existing laws against NK by:
- Designating North Korea as a primary money-laundering concern such as the U.S. Treasury previously designated Ukraine, Burma, and Iran.
- We could ban North Korean financial institutions’ correspondent accounts in the U.S. The U.N. Panel of Experts concluded that North Korean transactions continue to be mostly in “United States dollars from foreign-based banks and transferred through corresponding bank accounts in the United States.”
- We could also publicly identify and sanction all foreign companies, financial institutions, and governments assisting North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs and call on foreign banks, businesses, and governments to reciprocate U.S. actions.
- And lastly, we could formally charge North Korea as a currency counterfeiter.
I’m not sure why Obama did not do this. It’s a mystery to me.
OK, now let’s look at the Military Option.
- The U.S. could accelerate the deployment of additional ground-based midcourse defense interceptors in Alaska and California to prevent an emerging gap between North Korean ballistic missile capabilities and U.S. defenses. Usually, these are too little too late, but if he can’t get a launch at the right time, they might be worth the effort.
- We could place Nukes in South Korea and in Japan. That would put the ball in China and maybe even Russia’s court. Remember the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1961 when the UD backed the Soviets down and had them remove their missiles? The end result of that was the US also had to remove their missiles from Turkey. It was a fair enough compromise.
- We could strike NK with our Stirke Carrier Force sitting off of the coast of NK, but that might just trigger the NK’s to launch some nukes at Seoul, killing hundreds of thousands of people. Now, I’m not saying that’s good or bad. If we are going to get into a nuclear war, I would much rather it happen on the Korean peninsula, rather than the USA. I view Koreans killing Koreans similar to Vietnamese killing Vietnamese. But hey, that’s just me.
Now then…..how much of a threat is NK today. That little tidbit of information is realatively unknown. But what is known is this:
About half of the military advisors believe that NK is at level 2, while the other half believe they are level 3. One US General has publicly stated that NK is at level 4.....sorry Australia. My belief is level 2 with any assurances at all of a successful launch.
So, should we hit them now while at level 2, or wait another 2 years when it becomes more difficult when they are at level 4?
Inquiring minds want to know.
