When I was a young engineer and working in Denver, Colorado, one the VP's invited me to dinner at his house. When I arrived we sat in his living room and on his coffee table was a book he had labeled "Hard Sayings". It was a book with blank pages that various people would write their favorite Hard Saying.
One of my favorites was "If a frog had wings, he wouldn't Bump his ass". The meaning behind that was if you disagreed with the only logical solution to a problem, someone else could say "Yeah, well if a frog had wings, he wouldn't bump his ass". I found it quite humorous, as well as truthful.
I think my father's favorite "Hard Saying" was "Here's for Swimming with Bow Legged Women". I really didn't know what that meant until after I was drafted in the services of King Lyndon.
Do you have any good "Hard Sayings"? I bet the Aussies do.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

I haven't heard that one either.
What about 'rough as guts'. Usually used to describe either a person or a piece of work eg The road is rough as guts or he looks rough as guts.

Haste makes waste was always one of my faves I still use to day sometimes. Some others I can think of for now are -
Tough times don't last, tough people do.
Hard times will always reveal true friends.
And some others, referring to journeys in life.......
You have to learn to crawl before you can walk.
A 1000 mile journey begins with one small step.
Lately, I have been saying "Blood is thicker than water".
And last but not least, what I have lived by......
A penny saved is a penny earned.

I think we could modernise that last one Lola to a penny saved is a penny taxed.

haha, now that gets me thinking of how it can be modernised.....it's a penny earned a penny taxed just about, but make it something like.....a penny saved, is a penny worth half a penny due to inflation!
