Have you noticed? We are a watch-less world now. With the advent of the cell phone, watches went away. There is nothing wrong with that except........everyone seems to show up late for functions because it's a pain to turn your cell phone on and read it. Whereas, if you were wearing a watch, it would take about 1/2 second to realize what time it is.
Time is important. Not because of you so much, but because others might be waiting on you.
Let me give you an example........
On Saturday my wife and I went to a dinner in honor of one of our nieces birthdays.......she just turned 30 (big day in a young girls' life). There were going to be 15 people at this birthday party, and the reservation was at 7:15. At 7:15, my wife and I showed up and we were the first people there, so we sat and waited and ordered a glass of wine. People came dribbling in after that, and by 9:30 my wife and I were pretty hungry.....but not everyone was there yet, and Mom & Pop of the Birthday Girl wanted to wait until the Birthday Girl's sister showed up before ordering. I'm thinking.......in my most polite manner........screw that. I'm hungry, I'm ordering and then I'm out of here. Once I ordered, everyone else did (Birthday Girls' Sister shows up at 9:45).
What is it with young people today that they can't show up on time?
It really yanks my chain........especially at dinner functions. The older you get, the earlier you need to eat to digest the food BEFORE bed time (at least in my case). Eating a rich, but very tasty, meal late at night will usually keep me up for most of the night.
Christmas this year................all my nieces and nephews are going to receive a watch. TIMEX....It takes a Lickin', and keeps on Tickin'.........priceless.

I've never worn a watch for over 20 year, like you say, that's when I got my first mobile. I bought the wife an apple watch last week for her birthday £300. (notice I've found where the pound sign is)

I wear a watch. You can't look at your phone in the car in NSW, Australia.

I wear a watch. You can't look at your phone in the car in NSW, Australia. Me too. When I'm in the car, the phone goes down. Especially in Florida with all the horrible geriatric drivers from New York who only drive a car when they come to Florida. Gives new meaning to the phrase " Defensive Driving".

I always have worn a watch but then again, I'm a person who still owns a flip mobile phone. My son and eldest daughter never wear watches, or never used to though my son now has one. I guess in his job he couldn't be seen flipping out his phone every few minutes to check the time. Every teacher I knew wore a watch. Probably the same reason although all classrooms have a large clock in them, so maybe younger teachers don't feel the need now.
As for your tale about the girl's sister. I'm with you, I would be extremely annoyed. If you're going somewhere for a meal and the arrival time is 7.15, I would expect the meal to start by about 8pm. If I had been one of the birthday girl's parents, I would have been ordering by then and just saying that the sister could order something when she got there. Can I just say, I don't think turning up at 9.45pm was because she didn't have a watch. That was plain bad manners. And why everyone else was expected to wait over 2 hours I do not know. My attitude with parties, BBQs and the like is I will wait a little while for everyone to be there but after that, no way. Why reward bad behaviour?
It would be better for 99% of the guests who arrived on time or near it to get their meal eg by 8pm and for those who arrive late to miss out-maybe just get the coffee at the end.

Can anyone remember seeing that episode of Kojak in the Seventies, where Kojak is sitting in his car and hits the button on his digital watch? It was the talk of the school the next day, I can tell you.

Haha I just had a thought. This tardy woman will come a cropper if she ever goes on a cruise with princess lines. They usually have 2 dinner settings. The first is about 5.45pm and the second is about 8pm. You can order about 4 courses but you are expected to be seated within 15 mins of the arrival time and the courses come pretty quickly after that. If you were on either sitting and arrived 2 hours late, you'd miss out and if you were on the second sitting, the buffet would have changed over too so you'd be out of luck till breakfast.
The same with getting back to a ship at the designated time. I have seen youtube clips of people running along the wharf as a ship has started to sail away. Once it starts up, it won't come back, even if it is only a few feet away. We always made sure we were back on board at least 30 minutes before sailaway, which is what they suggest.
You don't find too many passengers who run too late for dinner or sailaway as they know the sailing world won't wait for them.

That's true Joe, however, there is one place you never see a clock.................Airports.
Why is that?

Hi Joe!! Nice to see you here. Small board so good to see some new faces.
With the watches. True, there are clocks everywhere but I like my watch so I can check the correct time. The clock in the car is about 10 minutes out. Plus when you want to know the time out shopping, 10 to 1 there won't be a clock anywhere around at that moment.
My kids just use their phones.
