Are cake smashes the latest thing in USA or England? Over here, when a child turns one, it seems the thing quite a few parents do is take them to a cake smash session. I'd never heard of them till recent years, I must admit.
So.. here is my grandson Zane at his. Not quite one yet, his birthday is later this month.
He's a very happy, placid little fellow with the darkest brown eyes. Not sure where they came from but his dad's heritage is Italian so perhaps from there.

Never heard of Cake Smashes either Sherri......but it looks like he's having fun. So, do kids who eat a little Vegemite smash their cake better than those who don't? Inquiring minds want to know.

I just googled to see if there were many US photographers doing cake smash sessions. Saw a few. The first I looked up though does it differently. They expected the parent to provide the cake and outfits.
Over here, the photographer usually supplies all props, including the cake. They have a photo gallery of outfits and the parents choose colour, cake is made to match and off they go. This does not come cheap. Prices are around $900 a session but my daughter knows the photographer so I don't think it is that dear for her.

They do the same thing here at weddings, where the bride and groom smash the wedding cake into each others faces.
$900 bucks for this and people whine about the cost of education for the kids.
Put it into a college fund.
And we wonder why the third world hates us.

Yes, I know. The prices make me hyperventilate too. My daughter would have only paid a fraction of that as the photographer is a friend. My other daughter, who had a baby a couple of months back, won a free sitting with this lady too (for a newborn shoot), so that was good.
I think some lesser established photographers charge only about $300-$400 for cake smash shoots.
All the same, it makes wedding photography seem more reasonable. I'm up to speed with costs now, after 3 weddings & 4 grandchildren in just over 3 years. But an American friend, her daughter was married about 6 years back. The photographer cost $10,000!
None of my children spent half that on a photographer, though costs were in the thousands. but at least the photographers spent hours travelling and taking photos. Baby photography-people come to you, it takes about an hour.
I've heard about wedding cake smash but not seen it done here. Cakes cost too much (you're looking at $600 for 2 tiers) so usually cake is cut up & used to serve with coffee. Besides, who wants cake smashed into their faces? Well, I wouldn't but I guess some people must do. Guess it is just what different people see as 'tradition'.

Oh I should point out too. The $900 does not cover getting an actual copy of any photo, as far as I know. For that you get the digital copies only. It's extra to have one made into a photo for the wall etc

And we wonder why the third world hates us. Amen to that Beachy.........$900 for a photo shoot? You could buy a pretty nice camera, costumes and cake for that.............and own all the photos. What happened to the DIY world?

You're probably right, but as I said, my daughter didn't pay this much. Others obviously do though as the photographer is booked out for the next few months.

Booked for several months?
We're in the wrong business.

That was my thought exactly.
In fact one of my daughters has taken a short photography course & is considering trying her hand at it, but at a much cheaper rate.
I think too many people are hopping on that bandwagon though. She did take her newborn to a much cheaper photographer, one just starting out, where the total spend (including 3 digital copies) comes to just under $300, and guess what. It turned out to be a woman I worked with. She now has 2 young children and I think is trying to start a home business. Not sure why she needs to as my daughter said the woman had the biggest house she had seen in a while and a massive, purpose built studio on the acreage.
I said to my daughter-if she spent $100,000 on building and set up (cameras, lights, props etc) it will be a while before that business shows a profit!!
There's obviously money in photography though, if you're good. As I mentioned earlier-my American friend paid $10,000 for her daughter's wedding photography. Some years back. It took my breath away at the time as I imagined not too much more than that for the entire wedding!
Nothing surprises me any more with wedding costs though.

Gosh he has grown, and looks adorable! Love those messy food photos, I think most of us having had kids didn't have to pay money to have them photos, I have plenty of my 2 with food all over the place! The one with vegemite all over the son's face when he was about one yr old.....classic! Got it everywhere except in his mouth by the looks of it......must of been the squishy feel of food to just rub in it!
